How old is my Admiral appliance?

Type the serial number from the Admiral label to see when it was built. Admiral units are built by Whirlpool since 2006, so the serials follow that company's format.

Reading a Admiral serial number

Admiral was a Maytag brand and is now sold by Whirlpool. Newer units use the Whirlpool code, so M44819595 means week 48 of 2014. Older units may end in two Maytag date letters.

About Admiral

  • Admiral started in Chicago in 1934 as a radio and TV maker.
  • Its appliance line went to Magic Chef, which Maytag bought in 1986. Admiral gave Maytag its start in refrigerators and freezers.

Whirlpool plant, year and week

Used 1970s to today. Example: C60842986

The serial starts with a plant code of one or two letters. The next character is the year and the two digits after it are the week. Year codes repeat: digits stand for the 1970s, 1980s or 2010s, and the 1990s letters came back in 2020.

Worked example: M44819595 fits Week 48 of 1974 (around November) or Week 48 of 1984 (around November) or Week 48 of 2014 (around November). The page above explains how to tell which.

The full lookup tables are on the Whirlpool page, since Admiral uses the same code.

Maytag year and month letters at the end

Used 1966 to the late 2000s. Example: 12772864EL

Older Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana and Admiral serials are all digits with two letters at the end. The first of those letters is the year and the second is the month. The year letters repeat every 24 years.

Worked example: 12772864EL fits June 1980 or June 2004. The page above explains how to tell which.

The full lookup tables are on the Whirlpool page, since Admiral uses the same code.
