How old is my Maytag appliance?

Type the serial number from the Maytag label to see when it was built. Maytag units are built by Whirlpool since 2006, so the serials follow that company's format.

Reading a Maytag serial number

Before Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006, serials ended in two letters: the year, then the month. Units built from 2006 to about 2009 may use either code. The checker reads both.

Newer Maytag serials use the Whirlpool code. MX06404786 means week 6 of 2020.

Whirlpool plant, year and week

Used 1970s to today. Example: C60842986

The serial starts with a plant code of one or two letters. The next character is the year and the two digits after it are the week. Year codes repeat: digits stand for the 1970s, 1980s or 2010s, and the 1990s letters came back in 2020.

Worked example: MX06404786 fits Week 6 of 1990 (around February) or Week 6 of 2020 (around February). The page above explains how to tell which.

The full lookup tables are on the Whirlpool page, since Maytag uses the same code.

Maytag year and month letters at the end

Used 1966 to the late 2000s. Example: 12772864EL

Older Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana and Admiral serials are all digits with two letters at the end. The first of those letters is the year and the second is the month. The year letters repeat every 24 years.

Worked example: 12772864EL fits June 1980 or June 2004. The page above explains how to tell which.
